How to apply for an HPMV permit

Updated: 23 November 2011

HPMV permits will only be approved for suitable vehicles carrying divisible loads of economic importance. Permited vehicles must also be able to travel on routes that are suitable for the vehicle and load being approved.

This page provides a step-by-step process to work through when applying for, or considering applying for, an HPMV permit.

Applying for a permit

To apply for an HPMV permit you will need to fill out an application form and apply through your regional NZTA office.

Before you apply:

Check the status of pending and approved HPMV applications

Has an HPMV permit already been approved for your proposed vehicle route?

  • Check the status of HPMV applications that the NZTA is currently processing, including approved routes and other applications we have received.
  • Consult our guidance maps. These show which routes have been approved, where HPMV vehicles can and cannot travel, and which routes are likely to receive further investment.
