Information for heavy vehicle drivers

Transport service licences

If you're intending to operate a transport service, you will probably need a transport service licence. The transport service licences you can apply for are:

  • goods
  • passenger
  • vehicle recovery
  • rental.

For more information see factsheet 47 Transport service licences, available by phoning 0800 699 000.

Certificates of knowledge of law and practice

With the exception of a rental service, either the licence holder or some other person in control of the transport service must have an appropriate certificate of knowledge of law and practice. There are different certificates depending on the type of transport service you intend to operate, eg goods, passenger and vehicle recovery.

The test covers the rules relating to the type of service you will be operating and the specific knowledge relating to the requirements and responsibilities of the transport service licence holder. The computer-based test is 'open book', which means you can take the handbook into the exam and use the information in it to help you answer the questions. There is a handbook for each type of transport service.

To get a copy of the handbooks referred to above, or find out more about the exam, contact your local NZTA office or Assessment Systems Ltd (phone (04) 913 9812 or fax (04) 913 9816).

Note: You cannot buy the handbooks at the place you sit the test.
