What the NLTP includes

Updated: 4 December 2009

The National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) includes activities that we anticipate will be funded from the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF). The NLTF only provides resources for core transport activities, which includes things such as public transport services and new and improved infrastructure. To be included, activities must either be proposed in a regional land transport programme or be an activity that is to be delivered nationally. They must also be of a sufficient priority to be funded.

Activities eligible for inclusion

The NLTP can only include regional activities that are proposed in a regional land transport programme. Regional transport committees decide what activities to include when developing these programme. Activities include:

  • operation, maintenance and renewal of local roads and of state highways
  • new and improved infrastructure for local roads and for state highways
  • public transport services, and maintenance of public transport infrastructure
  • improvements to public transport infrastructure
  • improvements to walking and cycling infrastructure
  • transport planning
  • demand management and community programmes.

The NLTP also includes activities that are delivered nationally such as:

  • road policing
  • demand management and community programmes
  • sector training and research
  • advice and guidance on transport planning activity development and funding, and management of funding through the NLTF.
