Project purpose
The road network around the Basin Reserve is an important link in the Wellington road of national significance (RoNS), the State Highway 1 corridor between Levin and Wellington Airport. The improvements will assist the smooth flow of traffic between the north and south of Wellington City. The improvements are intended to contribute to providing a high-quality, high-capacity, fast and reliable passenger transport spine as part of the Wellington Northern CorridorRoNS from Levin to Wellington Airport. This will improve the reliability and travel times of the route for through traffic, particularly to Wellington Airport and Wellington Hospital.
Benefits
The improvements are intended to contribute to providing a high-quality, high-capacity, fast and reliable public transport spine as part of the Ngauranga to Wellington Airport Corridor Plan. This will improve the reliability and travel times of the route for through traffic, particularly to Wellington Airport and Wellington Hospital. An important consideration is to provide enhanced amenities, safety and convenience for people who walk and cycle.
Features
Being an important passenger and commuter link for the Wellington region and Wellington city, this project involves a partnership between the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC), Wellington City Council (WCC) and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage (MCH). In mid-2009, NZTA invited tenders for the undertaking of investigations on the planned improvements around the Basin Reserve. The contract was awarded to Opus International Consultants. A multi-disciplinary team has now developed options ready for public engagement.
Other facts
Current
Public engagement on this project was initially scheduled for early 2010 but was deferred so that the options could be considered alongside the proposals for a second Mt Victoria tunnel and the widening of Ruahine Street and Wellington Road as part of the Mt Victoria Tunnel to Wellington Airport section of the wellington road of national significance.
A date for public engagement will be announced mid-2011. This will be be followed by more work leading to the selection of a preferred option. The project team will then undertake intensive work on refining the preferred option and when this is complete, further public consultation will take place.
