Project purpose

The duplication of the Terrace Tunnel will improve the efficiency of the main highway into and out of Wellington, and will improve route security. This will be achieved by increasing capacity in the southbound direction on the most congested part of the urban motorway.

Benefits

The duplication of the Terrace Tunnel will provide relief from severe congestion on State Highway 1 and will improve journey times and reliability of travel. Route security will be enhanced by providing a second tunnel bore which will increase our ability to maintain traffic flow during major incidents.

Features

The duplication will strengthen the strategic link between the Airport and the urban motorway, providing greater route reliability and enhancing Wellington’s transport hierarchy, thus facilitating the reallocation of road space in the CBD for public transport and pedestrians.

Other facts

The length of this section is approximately 1.5km.
