Ngauranga to Aotea Quay

The Ngauranga to Aotea Quay project is an active traffic management system project being undertaken as part of the Wellington Northern Corridor road of national significance (Levin to Wellington Airport) programme.

The project involves the four-kilometre section of State Highway 1 (SH1) between Ngauranga and the Aotea Quay on/off ramps which also forms part of the Wellington Urban Motorway. This is the most congested part of the motorway network particularly during morning and evening peak periods.

Project purpose

The aim of the project is to ease traffic congestion, improve journey efficiency through journey time reliability, and provide for smoother traffic flows particularly during peak travel periods.

In particular, the project aims to keep traffic moving on this very busy section of State Highway 1 and reduce the frustrating stop-start instances experienced during peak times.

Project update

  • The NZTA has been undertaking investigatory and preliminary design work since 2010.
  • An online survey was carried out by Colmar Brunton (on behalf of the NZTA) over a three-week period in March/April 2011 to better understand traffic/route issues along the Ngauranga to Aotea Quay section. The data gathered from the survey will be used in future planning.
  • Minor improvements to the route between Ngauranga and Aotea were undertaken in August 2011 to improve traffic flow particularly during peak times. Changes to the layout of the route will be introduced progressively from that date.
The minor improvement works will see the following:
    • A change to the northbound Wellington to Johnsonville/Petone section of the route which has seen an additional lane provided just before the State Highway 1/2 split. This has allowed two lanes of traffic to enter both State Highway 1 and 2.
    • A change to the southbound Johnsonville/Petone to Wellington section of the route which has seen the merge between State Highway 1 and 2 shortened. To better facilitate the flow of traffic, there is a need for drivers to merge more quickly here.

For an illustrative view of the changes, see our project change illustrations leaflet (PDF, 191 KB, 1 page).

Benefits

This is the most congested part of Wellington’s motorway network and the project objective is to ease congestion and smooth traffic flows as well as improve safety, route security and provide greater journey time reliability.
