State highway plans

Updated: 23 November 2009

The National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) sets out our plans for New Zealand's state highways in the next three years. It gives effect to the Government Policy Statement on Land Transport Funding (external link), by allocating funds to land transport projects that increase productivity and stimulate economic growth for the ultimate benefit of all New Zealanders.

The NLTP 2009-2012

The NLTP for 2009-2012 will invest more than $4.5 billion in the state highway network (nearly $1 billion more than in previous years). The investment is targeted at improving journey time reliability - something that's important to all travellers but particularly to businesses in helping to reduce transport costs - and will also fund work on seven 'roads of national significance'. This will improve access within and through New Zealand's largest cities, easing congestion and improving critical parts of our national freight and tourism routes.

You can read more about the upcoming programmes of work on state highways in the NLTP - or view our list of upcoming contracts.
