Maintaining our network

Worth $23 billion, New Zealand's state highway network is one of this country's most valuable assets. It comprises almost 11,000 kilometres of road, with 5981.3km in the North Island and 4924.4km in the South Island. The network provides a vital link to almost 83,000km of local roads. While they represent only 11 percent of New Zealand's roading network, state highways carry half of the country's traffic. Around 70 percent of all freight in New Zealand goes by road, and over 80 percent of people go to work by car, truck or motorbike. Find out how we look after one of this country's most important assets.
