Non-standard licence renewal periods and fees
The standard licence renewal period for older drivers (aged 75+) is two or five years, and 10 years for most other licence holders. Renewal fees for these drivers are shown above.
However, two groups of licence holders renew their licence for periods varying from 1-11 years:
- drivers upgrading from a synthetic paper licence (often called lifetime licences). For these applicants, their first photo licence will expire on their next mid-decade birthday

Changing or cancelling your test
If you want to change or cancel your test, you will have to pay a further fee.
- Where there are two or more complete working days (excluding weekends and public holidays) between the day you change or cancel your test and the date of your appointment, you will need to pay a rescheduling fee of $16.
This is a regulated fee to cover the time taken and costs incurred when a test is cancelled or rescheduled.
- Where there are less than two complete working days (excluding weekends and public holidays) between the day you change or cancel your test and the date of your appointment, you will not pay a rescheduling fee but will need to pay a further test fee. This further test fee is not refundable.
You may be eligible for a refund of the first test fee paid where the cancelled test time was subsequently filled by another person. If the test fee is refunded, a processing fee of $16 will be deducted.
How do I apply for a refund of driver licensing fees?
If you decide to cancel an application or a driving test you may be eligible for a refund of some or all of the fees you've paid.
We assess each refund application on its own merits. See more information on the refund application form (DL13) .
Send your completed refund application form to the Driver Licensing Administration at our Transport Registry Centre.
