Draft Traffic control devices manual Direction, service and general guidance signs

This draft volume Direction, service and general guidance signs isone of a number that will make up the Traffic control devices manual (the TCD manual). The TCD manual will provide guidance and standards for using traffic control devices to manage traffic. It will combine and replace many existing New Zealand-based documents, in particular the Manual of Traffic Signs and Markings, and provide links to others. The manual will also complement the Austroads series of guides (under preparation) by providing detailed or specific New Zealand practices not included in those documents.

Background

To support the TCD manual, to reduce duplication within it and provide detailed descriptions of traffic control devices companion documents providing specifications for signs, markings and signals are being developed.

Consultation

It is essential we receive input from the industry to ensure the TCD manual provides the best possible guidance to practitioners. Throughout the drafts, requests for views and information on some specific issues have been requested. While input on these issues will be of considerable interest we welcome comment on any aspect of the drafts.

Programme after comments received

The authors will analyse the comments on the draft Direction, service and general guidance signs and recommend appropriate changes for consideration by the Signs Working Group. This group is overseeing the guidelines and includes representatives of local government (2), Road Safety Manufacturers Association (2) and NZ Transport Agency (3). Their decisions will result in a further draft. Editing and formatting to NZTA standards will follow. Final sign-off by the Signs Working Group and Project Steering Group will be obtained before the document is published. It is intended the document will only be published electronically and will be available on the NZTA website. Publication is currently scheduled for September 2009.
