Overarching objectives for the SH1 Strategy have been developed. They focus on what NZTA wish to achieve over the strategy period of 30 years:

  • Continue to optimise the existing network to provide an efficient, safe and secure route that enables economic growth and is environmentally and socially sustainable.
  • Lower the risk of serious and fatal crashes along the route (as a first priority) using affordable low-cost road safety improvements, and working with our road safety partners (Police, ACC, local Authorities etc) to implement road safety programmes. As a secondary priority lower injury crashes along the route.
  • Manage the route security risks posed to SH1 by natural processes and hazards. Focus on cost effective monitoring procedures to ensure these risks are managed in a cost effective manner and improved where practical.
  • Put in place processes that mitigate development pressure and ensure that the State highway continues to be an effective and efficient transport link.
  • Take advantage of opportunities within the scope of NZTA's role as network managers to preserve and ideally enhance the immediate environment adjacent to the highway.
