The Draft Strategy to manage this corridor and its unique attributes has been developed in the context of the New Zealand Transportation Strategy and current Government Policy Statement. It has sought to:

  • Deliver a robust and affordable strategic study that will describe how the SH1 corridor will be managed for the next 30 years and recommend a 10 year implementation plan;
  • Manage any adverse environmental effects from the operation of the highway; and
  • Minimise and improve route security, route reliability and safety issues that need to be managed to ensure provision of an appropriate level of service for private and commercial vehicles.

SH1 is a roading corridor which requires dynamic solutions and management activities. The future key issue locations have been listed and recommendations for management activities made. The main areas requiring forethought and focus over the next 30 years are road safety solutions (beyond historic major improvement projects), particularly passing opportunities, the limitation of identified route security risk and the protection of the highway through land designations for future improvements. The strategy will influence future funding priorities for the corridor, works programme planning and asset management. Once finalised and adopted the SH1 Strategy will become the key regional level policy and activity document for ongoing highway management of this corridor.
