New Zealand's extensive rail networks cover some of the country's most demanding and often isolated terrain. This imposes significant demands on transport businesses carrying freight and passengers, and requires them to maintain a rigorous focus on safety and operational efficiency. These requirements also extend to those operating volunteer tourist and heritage railways and tramways in New Zealand.

To help ensure safety on New Zealand's railway networks, we're responsible for regulating railways by:

• administering the Railways Act 2005
• licensing organisations that control and use rail networks
• monitoring accidents and incidents.
