Forklifts

Updated: 5 February 2010

A forklift is special motor vehicle type designed principally to lift, carry or stack goods using one or more tines, platens, clamps or other similar attachments.

Driving a forklift on a road

To drive a forklift on a 'road', you must have a driver licence for the appropriate class and an F (forklift) driver licence endorsement. Your forklift must also be registered and have a warrant of fitness - and it may need an alternative fuel certificate.

Operating a forklift

To operate a forklift in a workplace that may include a 'road', you must complete the training required by the Department of Labour's Occupational Health Service (OSH).

Visit the Department of Labour website for more about the training requirements, and ACC's website for information on how to operate forklifts safely.
