The joint NZTA/RDC project to reduce traffic congestion and support growth in Warkworth includes increasing and upgrading pedestrian and cycling facilities in the area. The first to be completed will be - a three metre wide, shared pedestrian/cycleway – between Woodcocks Road and the Mahurangi River Bridge – and will open this week.
“We’ve worked closely with the college throughout the planning stages and we’re pleased that this first part of the upgrade project, which includes the planting of shrubs and trees along the route, will largely benefit their students,” said the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland, Tommy Parker.
The shared pedestrian/cycleway will provide a more pleasant and safer walking and cycling connection between Warkworth town centre and Woodcocks Road and new developments in the area.
Pedestrian and cycling improvements are also planned as part of the upcoming Hill Street intersection improvements.
There will also be changes to the highway layout next week north of Woodcocks Road. The safety improvements will provide more room for motorists waiting to turn right from, SH1 into Whitaker Road.
