Privacy and security - deceased drivers and the driver licence register

The NZTA is responsible for administering and maintaining the national driver licence register.

Part of keeping the national driver licence register up-to-date involves cancelling the licence record when a driver is deceased.

To assist the NZTA, the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages may notify us when a driver is deceased. This is provided for under Section 78A of the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act 1995.

When the NZTA receives such notification from the Registrar-General, we may write to the estate of those drivers seeking confirmation. This is to help ensure the correct licence record is cancelled.
